Aircraft and Airport Lighting: Reading the Language of Light at Night

Aircraft lighting isn't just about being seen — it's about being understood. At night, the lights on an airplane tell a story of where it's pointed and where it's going, and the beacons scattered across the dark landscape below quietly announce what each one marks: a civilian airport, a military field, a seaplane base, an obstruction you'd better not hit. Learning to read this language of light transforms night flying from intimidating to intuitive, because when you can glance at a distant set of lights and instantly know whether that aircraft is coming at you or moving away, or tell an airport beacon from a radio tower, you've replaced guesswork with fluency.


This post covers aircraft and airport lighting in practical depth: how position and anti-collision lights reveal an aircraft's direction, the airport beacon color codes, pilot-controlled lighting and how to activate it, obstruction lighting, the daytime beacon clue that signals weather, and the common misconceptions that catch night pilots.

Position Lights: Reading an Aircraft's Direction

Position lights (navigation lights) are the foundation of the language of light. They're on from sunset to sunrise and reveal an aircraft's orientation to anyone looking.


The configuration:

  • Red — left wingtip

  • Green — right wingtip

  • White — tail


Reading traffic from the lights:

The magic of position lights is that their combination tells you which way an aircraft is moving relative to you:

  • Red and green together (both wingtips): The aircraft is facing you — coming toward you or crossing. Red on your left, green on your right means it's pointed at you.

  • Only white: You're seeing the tail — the aircraft is moving away from you.

  • Red on your right, green on your left: This is the reverse of head-on — the aircraft is crossing, and the geometry tells you the direction.


The classic memory aid:

  • "Red, right, returning" is a maritime phrase, but for aircraft, think of it this way: if you see red and green, someone's coming. If the red is on the wrong side (your right), the aircraft is crossing right to left.


Why this matters:

  • At night, you can't see the aircraft's shape

  • The lights are all you have to judge direction

  • Reading them correctly is collision avoidance

  • A red-and-green pair growing brighter is traffic to take seriously


The right-of-way connection:

  • The red/green convention matches navigation rules

  • An aircraft seeing your red light (your left side) is the one that must give way in a converging situation

  • The lighting reinforces the right-of-way logic


Anti-Collision Lights: Drawing Attention

Anti-collision lights make an aircraft conspicuous and draw the eye to its movement.


The two types:

  • Rotating beacons (typically red) — often on the top and/or bottom of the fuselage

  • Strobe lights (usually white) — bright, flashing, on the wingtips and tail


When beacons are used:

  • Before engine start (a signal that the aircraft is "hot" or about to move)

  • Anytime the engine is running

  • The beacon is the "I'm active" signal


The beacon-before-start convention:

  • Turning on the beacon before starting is a courtesy and safety practice

  • It warns anyone near the aircraft that the propeller is about to turn

  • Ground crews watch for the beacon

  • A good habit that prevents ramp accidents


When strobes are used:

  • Most effective in flight

  • Very conspicuous

  • May be turned off on the ground (to avoid blinding others) or in clouds (to avoid disorientation from the flashing reflecting off the cloud)


The strobe judgment call:

  • Strobes reflecting off clouds can cause vertigo and disorientation

  • The regulations allow turning them off when their use would be unsafe

  • A pilot decision based on conditions

  • On the ground near others, courtesy suggests turning them off


Landing and Taxi Lights

These lights serve both visibility and safety.


Taxi lights:

  • Illuminate the ground during taxi

  • Lower intensity, aimed at the taxiway

  • Help you see where you're going on the ground


Landing lights:

  • Bright, forward-facing

  • Provide forward visibility during takeoff, landing, and low-level flight

  • Reveal obstacles, runway condition, wildlife


The visibility bonus:

  • Landing lights make an aircraft dramatically more visible to others

  • Especially valuable in the traffic pattern and near busy airports

  • Many pilots use landing lights below 10,000 feet or within airport areas even in daytime (the "operation lights on" practice) for conspicuity

  • A landing light pointed your way is easy to spot


The "lights on" practice:

  • The FAA encourages using landing/recognition lights below 10,000 feet and within 10 miles of an airport

  • Improves see-and-avoid

  • Day or night

  • A voluntary but widely adopted safety habit


Recognition and Logo Lights

Some aircraft carry additional lighting for conspicuity and identification.


Recognition lights:

  • Pulsing forward-facing lights

  • Increase visibility

  • Draw attention to the aircraft


Logo lights:

  • Illuminate the tail (and the airline logo)

  • Enhance identification

  • Add to overall conspicuity


The value:

  • Not required

  • Improve visibility

  • Add redundancy to the anti-collision system

  • Common on airliners and business aircraft


Airport Beacon Color Codes

The rotating airport beacon is one of the most recognizable sights in night aviation — a high-intensity light visible for miles, helping pilots locate airports in darkness or reduced visibility. The color pattern tells you what type of airport it marks.


The beacon color codes:

Beacon Colors

Airport Type

White and green (alternating)

Civilian land airport

White, white, green

Military airport

White and yellow

Seaplane base

Green, yellow, white

Heliport


Civilian land airport (white/green):

  • Alternating white and green flashes

  • The most common beacon

  • Green flash = civilian land airport


Military airport (two white, one green):

  • Two quick white flashes followed by one green

  • Distinguishes military fields

  • Prevents confusion in areas with multiple airfields


Seaplane base (white/yellow):

  • Alternating white and yellow

  • The yellow signals water operations

  • Distinguishes from land airports


Heliport (green/yellow/white):

  • Green, yellow, and white flashes

  • Helps rotorcraft find landing areas

  • A distinct combination


The memory approach:

  • Green = civilian land (the standard)

  • Yellow appears for water (seaplane) and heliports

  • Military gets the double-white flash

  • The colors encode the airport type


When Beacons Are On — and the Daytime Clue

Airport beacons follow patterns that carry information beyond just marking the airport.


Standard operation:

  • Typically on from sunset to sunrise

  • Also activated during reduced visibility

  • Mark the airport location in darkness


The critical daytime clue:

  • If an airport beacon is operating during the DAYTIME, it often means the weather is below VFR minimums

  • Specifically, in Class B, C, D, or E surface areas, a daytime beacon suggests the ceiling is below 1,000 feet and/or visibility is below 3 miles (IFR conditions)

  • This is a valuable weather indicator

  • Seeing a beacon on during the day should prompt you to check conditions


The nuance:

  • This daytime-beacon-means-IFR guideline applies in controlled airspace surface areas

  • At some airports the beacon runs continuously, so it's a clue, not a guarantee

  • Always verify actual weather

  • But a daytime beacon is a useful heads-up


Pilot-controlled and closed airports:

  • At some airports, the beacon is pilot-controlled

  • May be off if the airport is closed or well-lit

  • A beacon doesn't guarantee the airport is open or staffed



Pilot-Controlled Lighting (PCL)

An essential night skill the original post doesn't cover: activating airport lighting yourself.


What PCL is:

  • At many non-towered (and some towered) airports, the runway/approach lighting is pilot-controlled

  • You activate it by clicking your microphone on the CTAF/UNICOM frequency

  • The lights turn on for a set period (typically 15 minutes)


How to activate PCL:

  • Tune the correct frequency (listed on the chart/approach plate)

  • Click the mic a specified number of times within a few seconds

  • Standard clicking:

    • 7 clicks: Highest intensity

    • 5 clicks: Medium intensity

    • 3 clicks: Lowest intensity


The standard sequence:

  • Key the mic 7 times to turn the lights on at full brightness

  • Then adjust to 5 or 3 clicks for lower intensity if desired

  • The lights stay on for about 15 minutes

  • Re-click to reset the timer (important on a long approach)


Why it matters:

  • Arriving at a dark non-towered airport, YOU turn on the lights

  • If you don't know PCL, you may find yourself over an unlit runway

  • Click the mic well before arrival

  • Re-click during a long approach so the lights don't time out at the worst moment


What PCL controls:

  • Runway edge lights

  • Approach lighting (at some airports)

  • VASI/PAPI (sometimes)

  • Taxiway lighting (sometimes)


The practical habit:

  • Activate PCL 5-10 miles out

  • Verify the lights come on

  • Re-click if the approach is long

  • Confirm the runway is lit before committing


Obstruction Lighting

Reading the lights that mark hazards is part of the language of light.


What obstruction lights mark:

  • Towers (radio, TV, cell)

  • Tall buildings

  • Wind turbines

  • Cranes

  • Anything tall enough to be a hazard


The lighting types:

  • Red obstruction lights: Steady or flashing red, common at night

  • White strobe lights: High-intensity white strobes, day and night, on tall towers

  • Dual lighting: Red at night, white strobes by day on some structures


Wind farm lighting:

  • Synchronized red flashing lights on turbines

  • The whole farm may flash together

  • A distinctive pattern

  • Can be mistaken for other lighting


The hazard connection:

  • Obstruction lights warn you of tall structures

  • Critical at night when you can't see the structure itself

  • Especially important at low altitude

  • Give lighted obstructions wide clearance


The misidentification risk:

  • Towers and wind farms can look like airport lighting from a distance

  • A flashing light isn't necessarily an airport

  • Verify with the chart and beacon color codes

  • Don't mistake an obstruction for a runway


Common Night-Flying Misconceptions

  • "I see a beacon, so the runway lights must be on."

    • Not always. Runway lights may be pilot-controlled — you may need to click the mic to activate them. A beacon marks the airport but doesn't guarantee lit runways.

  • "Strobes must always be on."

    • Pilots may turn them off when their use would be unsafe — in clouds (disorientation) or on the ground near others (glare).

  • "A bright light means an airport."

    • Towers, wind farms, and industrial sites can mimic airport lighting. Use beacon color codes and the chart to verify.

  • "A daytime beacon doesn't mean anything."

    • In controlled airspace surface areas, a daytime beacon often signals IFR conditions (below 1,000 feet ceiling or below 3 miles visibility). A useful weather clue.

  • "Red and green lights mean the aircraft is moving away."

    • The opposite — red and green means you're seeing both wingtips, so the aircraft is facing you (coming toward you or crossing). Only white means moving away.


Why Lighting Knowledge Matters

At night, pilots lose many visual cues — terrain features, horizon definition, distance judgment. Lighting becomes the primary source of situational awareness. Knowing how to read airplane and airport lights helps you:

  • Avoid midair conflicts (reading traffic direction from position lights)

  • Navigate confidently (identifying airports by beacon color)

  • Activate the lighting you need (PCL)

  • Avoid obstructions (reading obstruction lights)

  • Detect weather clues (daytime beacons)

  • Reduce workload and make better decisions


Night aviation isn't about seeing everything — it's about recognizing the right things. Airplane lights tell stories of movement and intention; airport beacons mark safe havens in the dark; obstruction lights warn of hazards. Fluency in this language of light is what makes night flight intuitive.


On the Written Test and Checkride

Aircraft and airport lighting appear on tests. The most commonly tested topics:

  • Position light configuration (red left, green right, white tail)

  • Reading aircraft direction from lights

  • Airport beacon color codes (white/green civilian, etc.)

  • Pilot-controlled lighting (mic clicks)

  • The daytime beacon weather clue

  • Anti-collision light use
