What instruments must be installed and working on an airplane for it to be legal to fly in VFR conditions during the day?
Here's what you need to know.

Remember the acronym ATOMATOFLAMES.
A - Anti-Collision Lights
T - Tachometer
O - Oil Pressure Gauge
M - Manifold Pressure Gauge
For those aircraft with altitude engines.
A - Airspeed Indicator
T - Temperature Gauge
For those aircraft with liquid cooled engines.
O - Oil Temperature Gauge
For those aircraft with air cooled engines.
F - Fuel Quantity Gauges
L - Landing Gear Position Indicators
For those aircraft with retractable landing gear.
A - Altimeter
M - Magnetic Compass
E - Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT)
S - Safety Belts
If any of these items are missing or inoperative, a pilot must ensure they are properly fixed, or obtain a special flight permit prior to beginning the flight.
